Why invest in Morocco?

  • King Mohammed VIs Vision 2010 / Azur Plan projects aimed at increasing tourism in Morocco to 10 million by 2010
Morocco's tourism industry is currently experiencing a period of unprecedented change. Since coming to the throne in 1999, King Mohammed VI has shown that he is keen to modernise Morocco, attract investment and increase tourism. In January 2001, the government embarked on a national tourism strategy called Vision 2010 which aims to attract 10 million visitors to the country by the year 2010 and make Morocco one of the worlds premier tourist destinations. Of its main objectives, Vision 2010 aims to:
    • Reach 10 million tourists, 7 million of whom are international tourists (against 5.5million in 2005)
    • Create 160,000 beds (130,000 beds in sea tourist resorts and 30,000 beds in cultural destinations of the country) which will increase the national capacity to 230,000 beds
    • Increase investment of new sea side tourist resorts, infrastructure, the hotel trade and entertainment to 8-9bn
In order to achieve this, six locations along both the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts have been chosen for the development of luxury tourist resorts. This is known as the Azur Plan and construction for one of the resorts, Mediterrania Saidia is already well under way.
